One of the biggest and oldest sets of windmills in the country which seems to have started working at the end of the 19th century is located at Seli Ampelou at Lasithi plateau.
Built at the north side of the plateau the windmills which used to be more than 10.000, were very useful for the farmers as they produced the energy needed to water their crops.
Also, the 24 stonebuilt windmills that are saved until today were used by residents for grinding the wheat.
Today some of the windmills which are a great tourist attraction, have been rebuilt while almost 200 of them are still working.
