The settlement of Palaiokastro with almost 250 residents is located at 8 km distance from Heraklion.
Palaiokastro is known for its Venetian fortress which is built on a huge rock above the sea.
The fortress had great strategic importance because it protected from invasions the whole gulf of Heraklion in cooperation with the fortress of Koule.
The settlement is also known for its beautiful small beach that is located 500 m from the beginning of Palaiokastro gorge and which is the most times protected by the island’s strong winds.
