Avdou village is located 40 kilometers from Heraklion, around 230 meters above sea level, and its name probably comes from the prophet Avdios, whose temple is in the area.
It has around 350 inhabitants who involved with the production of olive oil. There are several sightseeings such as the church of Agios Konstantinos, which was built around 1445 with extremely interesting frescoes, the cave of Saint Foteini, the cave of Faneromeni and others. The traditions of the village is extremely rich with several revivals of old customs.
Many well-known personalities, such as the director Manousos Manoussakis and Stefanos Xanthoudides, also come from Avdou.
