Asteri village is located 12 kilometers south of Rethymno at an altitude of 80 meters. It is a beautiful village where it was probably named after a fountain that was in the center of the village, which has a shiny marble lion's head.
The village has gone through many looting of the Turks and later in the Second World War suffered several disasters.
Nowadays many of the old houses have been renovated as well as have been built new since old residents have returned.
